Founded in 1925, NHK is Japan's non-commercial, public broadcasting system. Today, NHK is the world's largest broadcast entity, transmitting more than 150 program hours daily to roughly 36.6 million subscribing households. With an annual operating budget of more than five-billion dollars, NHK's staff of 13,300 employees serve the Japanese public in 54 domestic broadcasting stations and 25 overseas bureaus/offices.

Domestically, NHK is comprised of two terrestrial television networks, two home-direct satellite networks, two AM radio networks, one FM radio network and Radio Japan, Japan's short-wave overseas service. NHK also provides about half of the 16 hours of HDTV programs now broadcast each day in Japan.

Stuart Calcote is the only foreign national (non-Japanese) ever to be employed by NHK in a senior staff position. Calcote was Executive Producer and Director of International Programs for NHK 1992-1997 and is now President of Electronic Pictures Corporation.
